Saraki told the truth and it stings

Bukola Saraki said something today on Channels TV that got me thinking. He said a legislature that cannot say no to the executive is of no relevance. And he is right. We have sat here and watched the National Assembly rubber-stamp everything from budgets to constitutional amendments without any serious debate. That is not a parliament, that is a photocopy machine.

Saraki also said the independence of the National Assembly is not rebellion against the government. I know people will argue he is just bitter because he fell out with his own party. But let us be honest. When last did our senators or reps actually block an executive bill that was bad for ordinary Nigerians? They just collect their jumbo pay and clap. The mandate is never tested, so nobody trusts the system.

Be honest. Can you name one time in the last five years where the National Assembly stood up to the president on something that truly affected your pocket?
