Tinubu just gave the most important Democracy Day speech since 1999

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu just finished his Democracy Day address and I dey tell you, this one was different. He didn't just talk about June 12 and MKO Abiola like every other year. He actually addressed the abduction of our children in Oyo and Borno directly, admitted the mood is dampened because of security, and then dropped figures that made me sit up. He said terror-related deaths are down 81% since 2015 and over 13,000 terrorists neutralised in the past year. But the real shocker was the budget: N5.41 trillion for defence and security in 2026, the largest ever.
He also mentioned that over 124,000 fighters and their dependents have surrendered through Operation Safe Corridor since 2023. That number is massive. But here is the part that got me. He said to bandits and kidnappers, quote, "Surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian State. These windows of surrender will not remain open forever." That is the strongest language I have heard from any president on this issue. He also reminded us that Ekiti and Osun elections are coming and urged INEC and security agencies to make them credible.
But the part that really hit home was when he addressed young people directly. He said, "Nigeria is your home and your future. Build here, code here, work here, and vote here. Every great nation was built by those who stayed to solve problems, not by those who abandoned ship." That is a direct challenge to the japa wave. He also listed all the democracy heroes by name — MKO Abiola, Kudirat Abiola, Gani Fawehinmi, Bola Ige, Alfred Rewane, Beko Ransome-Kuti, Frank Kokori, and others. Not just the famous ones. He even remembered Chima Ubani and Arthur Nwankwo. That level of detail shows somebody actually did research for this speech. My question is: after 27 years of civilian rule, can we honestly say democracy has delivered economic freedom, or are we still stuck on just political freedom?
