Peter Obi says June 12 is both tragedy and triumph — but are we really better off?
Peter Obi posted on his X handle today that June 12 is both a monumental tragedy and the ultimate triumph of the collective will of the Nigerian people. He asked if our elections today are as transparent as they were in 1993 and if the social contract is being honoured. That man knows how to make a point without shouting.
But let me ask you something — 27 years of uninterrupted democracy and we are still asking if elections are free and fair? Still asking if institutions serve the people? June 12 should remind us that MKO Abiola's mandate was stolen and we are still fighting the same fight. The only difference is that now politicians steal with better PR.
I respect Obi for raising these questions but I am tired of reflection without action. Be honest — has democracy actually improved your life or are we just celebrating survival?
