So a new documentary on MKO Abiola called MKO is premiering at Sheffield DocFest in the UK today, 12 June — which is our Democracy Day. The film is directed by Nigerian filmmaker Ose Oyemandan and it's 108 minutes long, selected for the International Competition section.
This thing is not just any documentary o. It covers the annulment of the June 12 1993 election, Abiola's detention, and the unanswered questions around his death in 1998. The filmmakers interviewed Ibrahim Babangida, Abdulsalami Abubakar, Wole Soyinka, Thomas Pickering, and even Abiola family members. Oyemandan said his interest came from working as a journalist for Abiola's publications during that crisis period before he had to leave Nigeria.
Dem go show this film on the exact day we suppose be celebrating the freest election we ever had. How many Nigerians even know Sheffield DocFest exists? Or that this story still get power to draw international attention after 33 years?
