Abdulmumuni Abiola just told us blunt truth about our democracy
5 months ago
Abdulmumuni Abiola, MKO Abiola's son, said on Arise News Thursday that Nigerians must get involved and defend their votes if we want real change. He said people are not getting democracy benefits because they are not making the input first. He advised us to get our voter cards, go out and vote, and defend those votes instead of just staying angry at home.
I have been thinking about this from Kano. Many of us here in the North complain about insecurity and bad governance but when election comes, we either sell our votes for 5k or stay at home because we think our vote does not count. Abdulmumuni is right that democracy is a journey not a destination. But the question is, after 27 years of this journey, are we still in the same spot we started? He even admitted that the issues from 1993 are still with us today.
He also warned about state policing saying we need proper framework to avoid abuse. I agree with him there. We see what federal police do now, imagine if state governors control their own police. Be honest, do you really think your vote can still change anything in this country or is it just a waste of time?
