Abraham Anekaly, a 32-year-old security guard, has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly defiling a 16-year-old girl in the Abule-Ijoko area of Ifo Local Government. According to the police spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the suspect accosted the victim on Tuesday night while she was on her way home, threatened her with a locally made single-barrel gun, and forcibly took her to his residence where he assaulted her.

The case was reported at the Agbado Division early on Wednesday by a family member, and detectives responded swiftly. The suspect was tracked down, arrested, and the firearm used to threaten the victim was recovered. Babaseyi added that preliminary investigation reveals Anekaly also attempted to rob the victim of her belongings. The victim has been taken to a hospital for medical examination and treatment.

The State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, has reiterated the Command's zero-tolerance policy for sexual and gender-based violence, especially against minors, and assured the public of diligent prosecution. This is a stark reminder that those entrusted with protecting our communities can sometimes be the perpetrators of the worst crimes. How many more young girls must suffer before we demand better vetting and oversight of security personnel?
