Tinubu just renamed a whole university after Shehu Yar'Adua

President Bola Tinubu has renamed the Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna as the General Shehu Musa Yar'Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology. He announced this during his Democracy Day address today, Friday June 12 2026.

Tinubu said during the broadcast, "Every generation has a defining responsibility. The generation of our founding fathers secured independence—the generation of June 12 secured democracy. Our generation must secure prosperity." He also called Yar'Adua one of the architects of modern democratic Nigeria, which is true — the man served as Obasanjo's Chief of Staff, founded the PDM, and died in Abacha's prison for opposing military rule.

This is a big move from Tinubu. Yar'Adua's legacy is real, but some people are already arguing this is just political positioning ahead of 2027. What do you think — genuine honour or another strategic renaming?
