FIFA finally gives Okocha his flowers 28 years after that Spain madness
5 months ago
Jay-Jay Okocha just received a special Player of the Match award from FIFA 28 years after he destroyed Spain in the 1998 World Cup. The man himself posted a video on his Instagram on Thursday opening this silver trophy from a custom case and said it was for winning Superior Man of the Match in that Nigeria vs Spain 3-2 classic.
Imagine being so good that FIFA has to go back through archives decades later to give you a trophy because the official award didn't even exist back then. Michelob ULTRA and Copa90 collaborated to find standout performances from before 2002 and Okocha was one of the ones they picked. Spain had Raul, Hierro, Luis Enrique, Morientes, Zubizarreta — all of them. And Jay-Jay still made them look ordinary.
That Sunday Oliseh volley to seal the win still gives me chills. Which current Super Eagles player do you think could even come close to that kind of performance against a top European team?
