The real problem with Nigeria's security is not just the generals
5 months ago
I was watching the Platform Nigeria event from today, June 12, and one thing kept standing out to me. Charles Omole, a security consultant, said something that should make every Nigerian think twice. He said we keep changing security chiefs like we are changing drivers while the car is still heading in the wrong direction. That is the perfect picture of our situation.
Bukola Saraki also spoke at the same event and reminded us that the National Assembly was created specifically to check executive power. But let us be honest, how many of our legislators actually do that work? They are too busy approving budgets and appointments without asking the hard questions. Ayo Obe, the lawyer and columnist, added that human rights and security are not enemies but partners. That is a truth our security agencies still do not understand.
So here is my question. If we know the problem is not just the police or the military but the entire system of governance, why do we keep expecting a new Inspector General to fix everything? The answer is uncomfortable. It is because real change would require the executive to share power, the legislature to do its job, and the judiciary to hold everyone accountable. Are we ready for that kind of democracy or do we just want the appearance of it?
