The day my landlord quoted the constitution at me over a NEPA bill
5 months ago
My landlord called me into his parlor last week. I thought it was about the rent arrears. Instead, he brought out a printed copy of the 1999 Constitution and pointed to Section 43. He said, "Joe, the law says every Nigerian has the right to acquire and own immovable property anywhere in Nigeria. So why are you still renting?"
I just stood there. The man quoted constitutional law at me because I complained that his generator runs only from 6pm to 10pm. Meanwhile, the inverter he installed in 2019 has been dead for two years. I dey tell you, na wa oh. These days, even your landlord wants to be a Supreme Court justice.
I asked him if Section 43 also covers the right to 24-hour light. He said no, but the Landlord and Tenant Law says I must pay rent on time. I just nodded and went back to my room. Where my small fan dey fight for my life.
