Tinubu gave armed groups a final warning on Democracy Day
5 months ago
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu used his Democracy Day broadcast today to tell armed groups in Nigeria to surrender or face the full force of the state. He said the year's celebrations had been dampened by recent kidnappings of school children, especially in Oyo and Borno states, but insisted security is still the government's priority.
He announced over 50,000 new police officers and a record 5.41 trillion naira ($4 billion) for defence and security this year. Tinubu also claimed the military killed 13,000 terrorists in the past year and that civilian deaths from insurgents dropped 81% since 2015. But with attacks spreading to southern states and millions struggling with rising food and transport costs, I'm wondering if these numbers actually match what we are feeling on the ground.
