NHRC just called out INEC and politicians ahead of 2027
5 months ago
Tony Ojukwu of the National Human Rights Commission dropped a statement today for Democracy Day and he did not hold back. He reminded us that June 12, 1993 remains the clearest proof that free and fair elections are possible when institutions respect the will of the people. But then he went straight into how we are still dealing with vote buying, voter suppression, electoral violence, and result manipulation almost 30 years later.
He said credible elections are a fundamental human right and not a privilege. The man is calling on INEC, political parties, security agencies, the judiciary, and even the National Assembly to strengthen laws and uphold transparency. With the Ekiti and Osun offcycle elections coming as a test for the new INEC chairman Joash Amupitan, I just wonder if anybody will actually listen or if we are in for another round of the same wahala.
