CBN wins Central Bank of the Year and nobody is talking about it
5 months ago
So Yemi Cardoso just collected the Central Banking award for Central Bank of the Year in London on June 10 and the reception here is crickets. The man said himself, "We receive this recognition with humility. We see it, not as a destination, but as encouragement to continue the important work ahead." Meanwhile inflation has dropped to about 15 percent, forex reserves crossed 50 billion dollars, and we finally exited the FATF grey list. That is not small thing.
But the real shocker for me is how Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was quoted saying Nigeria under Buhari was heading the way of Venezuela and Zimbabwe. That is a former CBN governor calling out the mess Cardoso inherited. Now the same institution that was drowning in opaque policies and 7 billion dollars in FX backlog is being celebrated as the Oscars of Banking. Abeg who else finds it funny that the same people shouting about hardship are the ones who refused to let the CBN do its job properly?
