South Africa just started deporting 586 Nigerians for irregular immigration
5 months ago
South Africa has begun repatriating 586 Nigerians found living there without valid documents. The Department of Home Affairs said the first batch of 268 Nigerians was deported on June 11, and the rest will follow on June 15. They were declared undesirable under immigration laws and cannot return for five years.
Minister Leon Schreiber said the government is tightening enforcement and deportations have increased as part of ongoing reforms. New digital identity tools and expanded electronic travel authorisation are being introduced to improve border control. The Nigerian High Commission issued emergency travel documents to facilitate the removal.
This is a sharp reminder that japa without proper papers can backfire badly. I have seen too many people rush into a country on a visitor visa and overstay, thinking nobody will catch them. But immigration systems are getting smarter everywhere. Is the risk really worth it when you could be banned for years?
