Minister finally admits what we all know about education funding
5 months ago
Minister of Education Tunji Alausa just dropped some painful truths at OAU's 65th anniversary. He said federal allocations to education have been stuck between 5% and 8% when UNESCO says we need 15-20%. So our labs dey empty, libraries can't afford modern journals, and infrastructure dey rot.
But the part that hit me hardest was when he said over 2 million qualified candidates apply for less than 500,000 university spaces every year. Two million people. That is not a gap, that is a canyon. And our best lecturers and brightest graduates dey flee to Europe and America like their lives depend on it. Alausa called it a hemorrhage of talent, and he is not wrong.
Meanwhile Nigeria spends less than 0.2% of GDP on research and development. Israel spends 4%, South Korea nearly 5%. Oya tell me, how we go fit compete in anything when we refuse to invest in the people who suppose build the future?
