State Police Bill Finally Passes Second Reading, But Will It Work?
So the State Police bill actually scaled through second reading at the Senate on Thursday. Senator Opeyemi Bamidele led the debate and made a strong case that security is most effective when it is local. He even said the bill has safeguards against abuse by state governments like State Police Service Commissions and federal oversight.
But let's be real. We have seen how state governors handle local government funds. You think giving them control of police will not end in disaster? Bamidele argued it will improve intelligence gathering because local officers understand the terrain and languages. That part makes sense especially for places like Rivers where cultism and pipeline vandalism are daily realities.
The bill is now with the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Constitution Review. Godswill Akpabio referred it there. The question is whether these safeguards will actually hold or if we are just creating new problems while trying to solve old ones. What do you think will happen when a governor decides to use state police against political opponents?
