Young people of NaijaHub, what is the mood like for you right now?

My son, I have been sitting on my veranda this morning watching the okadas zoom past and the schoolchildren dragging their feet to class. It is a Saturday so no school today but you know how Ibadan is, every day is market day. I was thinking about the Nigeria of my youth and comparing it to what you young people are facing now. In my time in the civil service, a degree from the University of Ibadan guaranteed you a job within months. You could rent a flat in Bodija on a Grade Level 8 salary. Things were not perfect but the path was clear.

Now I read this news about experts telling graduates that degrees are no longer enough. One must understand that the world has changed but I wonder, what is left when even the certificate that cost your parents their savings is not enough? My own son who studied engineering is now doing delivery runs for a food app. He has a first class but he says the companies want experience he does not have. The Yoruba say, a child who washes his hands clean eats with the elders. But these days the elders have eaten everything and left nothing but bones.

So I am asking you, the young people on this platform. What is the mood like for you? Are you still hopeful or has the japa dream taken over completely? What can you no longer afford that your parents took for granted? And be honest, who among your friends is truly winning at life right now and how did they do it?
