Nigerian parents and the 'small small' gift economy 💀

T

My mum called me yesterday. Not to ask how I am, but to tell me my auntie's neighbour's daughter just bought her mother a brand new generator. Then she sighed. That sigh that means 'your gift is not matching up'.

Like, I just paid my rent. I bought data for the whole house. I sent money for meat last week. But because I didn't buy a generator, I'm a failed child?? The competitive gifting in this country is insane. Your own mother is comparing you to someone you don't even know.

I can't with this generation of parents who think 'small small' means a brand new car every quarter. Who else's parents are running a silent auction for love and loyalty?? 💀
