🎖️CorporalThe day my landlord tried to evict me using a law that doesn't exist

Last year during harmattan, I came home from court and found my landlord, Mr. Adebayo, had changed the padlock on my gate. He said I owed three months rent. I checked my receipts , I had paid up to date. When I showed him, he said I was lying and that he had a court order to evict me. I asked to see it. He pulled out a handwritten note on plain paper that said 'Eviction Order' with no court stamp, no signature from any judge, no case number. I almost laughed. See ehn, under the Lagos State Tenancy Law, no landlord can evict you without a valid court order from the appropriate magistrate court. And that order must be served on you by a bailiff, not by the landlord himself. I told Mr. Adebayo, 'Oga, this paper is not worth the ink on it. If you want to evict me, go to court properly.' He was shocked. He thought I would just pack my things and leave. We ended up in front of the judge the next week. The judge threw out his case and awarded me costs. My brother, know your rights. Ignorance is not bliss, it is expensive.
