I Was a Choir Minister in Kano While Sleeping With a Married Man from the Congregation

Back in 2022, I was 27 and the lead chorister at a popular Pentecostal church in Kano. I had the voice of an angel, everybody said so. But after Sunday service, I was living a life that would have gotten me chased out of the church with stones. There was this man, Alhaji Suleiman. He was 52, married with four children, and he sat in the front row every Sunday with his wife. He started sending me money through the church account , 20,000 naira here, 30,000 there , for 'ministry support.' Then the texts started. Innocent at first. Then not so innocent. Omo, I knew it was wrong. I was standing on that altar singing 'Way Maker' while my phone buzzed with his messages from the second row. The hypocrisy was eating me alive. But the money was good, and I was tired of being broke and holy. One evening after midweek service, he asked me to come to his car to pray for his business. We didn't pray. That was the first time. It went on for eight months. Every Tuesday night, after Bible study, I would tell my roommate I was going to visit a sick church member. I was going to his guest house in Nasarawa. The day it almost ended was when his wife walked into the church office while I was sitting there. She looked at me and said, 'My husband has been acting strange. You wouldn't know anything about that, would you?' I smiled and said, 'Mummy, I will pray for him.' She stared at me for a long time. Then she walked away. I left that church three weeks later. Told them God was calling me to plant a new branch. The truth is, I couldn't look at that woman's face anymore. I am still in ministry, but now in a different city. And I am still not sure if I am running from God or just hiding from my shame. The lesson I learned is that the altar does not make you holy. Only your choices do. And I made the wrong ones for a long time.
