268 Nigerians return from South Africa after xenophobic attacks

P

Yesterday, 268 Nigerians arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on a government-facilitated evacuation flight, fleeing what they described as escalating xenophobic attacks, intimidation, and economic exclusion in South Africa. Among them was Rafiu Wasiu, a mechanic who spent years there. He said, "I'm so happy right now. I'm glad to be returning home safely. They started the attacks alongside warnings that we should leave the country."

Wasiu recounted a system where foreigners are routinely targeted. He alleged that police stop you on the road, and once they see money on you, they say somebody has Mandela's head here because Mandela's picture is on the currency, then they take your money. He also described random street violence: "You can just see them on the street calling you. They will say, 'Hey, come here, let me have your phone.' If you resist, they bring out a knife and stab you. And, the police will do nothing." Milly Abuh, who ran a small retail business, said police closed her shop over documentation issues and beat her when she asked questions. Lara Jacob, who had valid permits, was told to "go home and fix our country" when she tried to renew them. Justine Okonkwo left his wife and two children behind in South Africa after their clothing business was shut down on claims they were taking jobs.

These are not stories from decades ago. This happened in recent weeks. The South African government has a responsibility to protect all people within its borders, but these accounts suggest a systemic failure. As Wasiu said, "These are black South Africans. They treat us like animals. They don't have any regard for us." Now back home, he says, "I am not lazy and I am happy to be back in my country. I will look for a job and do it with peace of mind." The question is: how long before we stop seeing our brothers and sisters return in this manner, and when will African governments hold each other accountable for the dignity of every African?
