State police will make Nigeria more insecure
5 months ago
This article makes a point I have been thinking for months. The push for state police is a dangerous illusion. The House bill empowers governors to issue directives to state police commissioners, with federal arbitration for "unlawful directives." That alone tells you they expect abuse. We are about to create 36 new police forces controlled by the same political class that already weaponizes everything.
The numbers don't lie. The World Poverty Clock shows 31% of Nigerians live in extreme poverty. The UN says 35 million face acute hunger. ₦2.23 trillion paid to kidnappers between May 2023 and April 2025. More police forces under governors who already run states like personal estates will not fix this. It will just give them more tools to harass opponents and protect their cronies.
Am I the only one who thinks this is a recipe for disaster?
