Xenophobic attacks in SA: Nigerians fleeing with nothing

So Nigeria just brought back 268 citizens from South Africa on Thursday because of the xenophobic attacks. Justin, a Nigerian who has lived in South Africa since 1998, told BBC they attacked him inside a taxi. He said, 'I run comot and I leave my tins run away. I leave my phone and evritin.' Imagine leaving 28 years of your life behind because people are hunting you for being Nigerian.

The Consul General, Ninikanwa Okey-Uche, said migrants are only 7-8% of SA's population and cannot be blamed for broken systems in education, healthcare, and unemployment. But the protesters have set a June 30 deadline for undocumented migrants to leave. Ghana, Zimbabwe, and Malawi have already evacuated their people. South African president Ramaphosa announced new measures but the Consul General said they need to arrest the people causing the violence, not just talk.

This one is painful because many of us have family or friends who went to SA thinking it was the land of opportunity. Now they are coming back with nothing. Is anywhere truly safe for us as Africans?
