Last year during harmattan, my sister Tolu came home from UNN for Christmas break. She was flexing small, saying how her departmental scholarship covered everything , hostel, feeding, even some extra cash for outings.
I just dey smile and nod. But the truth? That scholarship only covers her tuition. The real money , the ₦85,000 per semester for her lodge, the ₦12,000 weekly feeding allowance, the ₦25,000 for textbooks, the transport money , all that comes from my pocket.
My mother called me one evening in August 2024. 'Kola, your sister dey cry say scholarship short. She say she fit drop out.' I told my mother, 'Mama, tell her make she calm down. God go provide.'
I sold a Toyota Camry I was saving for myself. Made ₦350,000 profit on that deal. Sent ₦200,000 to her account through my mother's name. Told her it was 'church support'.
She believes am till today. I don't have the heart to tell her. Let her think she's smart on her own. That's what matters. When she graduates and becomes a chartered accountant, she'll never know who paid for those nights she slept comfortably in her lodge while I was sleeping in my car at Berger waiting for customers.
God is involved. The hustle will pay off.
