My dear, I was on the phone with my younger sister in Ibadan yesterday. She just finished NYSC, first class in Economics from UI. She dey apply for jobs since January, nothing. Now she dey talk about japa to Canada because na the only thing her mates dey do. I ask her, you don calculate the cost? She say she go manage. E no easy.
I dey think about this generation. When I was coming up in the 2000s, we had hope. Hard work plus God, you go see something. But now? My son in year 9 here in London, his Nigerian friends back home dey send him voice notes about how they can't afford data to apply for school abroad. The ones wey get degree dey drive Bolt. The ones wey get sense dey look for visa lottery. Na wa oh.
I want to understand something. For those of you still in Nigeria, young and trying, what exactly dey keep you going? Is it the japa dream? The church? Your side hustle? Or you just dey wake up every day because what else can you do? I no be politician, I just want to hear the real gist. What's the mood like on the ground right now?
