The way Nigerian men beg for 'space' but still want your full attention

My sister called me yesterday from Surulere, crying. She said her husband told her he needs 'space' to think about their marriage. But the same man is calling her every hour asking if she has eaten. Abeg, what kind of space is that? If you want space, go sit inside your car and think. Don't be calling me to ask if I added salt to the stew.

Nigerian men and this 'space' thing e no make sense. When I was coming up in Ibadan, my father never asked my mother for space. He just went to sit under the mango tree with his friends and drink palm wine. That was his space. My mother never knew she was giving him anything. Now these young men have watched too many Western movies and they want to 'find themselves'. But they still want you to iron their shirts and cook their rice while they are finding themselves.

I told my sister, my dear, tell him you are also finding yourself. And your finding yourself includes going to visit your mother in Ibadan for two weeks. Let him cook his own space and eat it. The problem is we give them too much peace and they start thinking peace is a problem. Anyway, I don talk my own. Who else has a husband who wants space but cannot spend one night without calling to ask where the remote control is?
