My hot take: ladies who say 'I don't cook' are not ready for marriage
5 months ago
I know this one will ruffle some feathers but I have seen too many things in my counseling experience and I need to speak my mind. The thing about life is that marriage is partnership not a reality show. When a young woman tells me proudly that she does not cook I don't hear independence I hear someone who has not thought deeply about what it means to build a home.
Look at it this way. My wife is a pharmacist she works long hours at the hospital and I am a pastor my schedule is unpredictable. But when she comes home tired I know she will still season the stew and check on our daughter's homework. Not because I expect it but because she understands that a home runs on small sacrifices. And when I am the one home early I am in that kitchen chopping vegetables and making sure the rice is not burning. It is not about gender roles it is about showing up for each other. Our people say that the hand that gives is always above the hand that receives but in marriage both hands must give.
I am not saying every woman must be a professional chef but the attitude of refusing to learn basic life skills before marriage worries me. What happens when the nanny does not show up or when money is tight and you cannot afford to eat out every day. A home is built on shared responsibility not on declarations of what you will not do. So my question is simple. If you are dating someone who says they will never cook or clean or help build the home what exactly are you building together?
