FCCPC’s telecom lending reforms trigger foreign monopoly debate in Nigeria

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission’s (FCCPC) push to open up Nigeria’s telecom lending sector has sparked a debate over foreign monopoly and economic sovereignty. Social advocate Obiasogu David highlighted the significance of the FCCPC’s dispute with Optasia, a South African-listed fintech operating in Nigeria through Nairtime Nigeria Limited. David noted that for years, one dominant provider held significant influence over the airtime and data lending market. “The regulation included opening up the market to other players, especially Nigerian-owned companies,” he said. The FCCPC’s Digital Economy and Online Non-Traditional Lending (DEON) framework, introduced in July 2025, aims to boost competition, consumer protection, and indigenous participation. The Commission clarified it did not ban services but requires operators to register, comply with disclosure rules, and uphold fair standards.
