Seven military commanders killed by terrorists since January
5 months ago
Nigeria has lost seven military commanders since January this year. Six in active service and one retired Major General. The bloodshed is staggering and it keeps getting worse.
Lieutenant Colonel O.C. Okolo was killed on February 16 in Borno. Lieutenant Colonel S.I. Iliyasu died on March 6. Lieutenant Colonel Umar Farouq was murdered on March 9. Colonel I.A. Mohammed died on April 13. Brigadier General Oseni Omoh Braimah was gunned down by ISWAP on April 9. The most heartbreaking is Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar who was abducted along the Marabar Musawa-Kafinsoli road in Katsina on May 30 alongside his wife. He died in captivity from complications of diabetes and hypertension. His captors had demanded the release of three of their members.
Peter Obi called it a national tragedy and a sobering indictment of the insecurity in our country. Sam Amadi called it a national disaster. I am asking myself — if a retired general cannot be safe in this country, what hope is there for the rest of us?
