Naira don finish middle class car dreams for this country
5 months ago
My guy just called me from Cotonou. He saw a 2018 Toyota Camry, clean body, original mileage. The owner dey ask for $12,000. Last year that same car would have cost us around ₦8 million at the old rate. Now na over ₦16 million. The middle class wey supposed to buy these cars don become spectators.
I dey tell you, the people wey still dey buy tokunbo now na either the real big boys or those wey collect loan and go suffer later. The market don shift. The person wey had ₦10 million last year could buy two decent cars. Today that same ₦10 million fit barely buy one half-bad car. The gap dey widen and the middle class dey squeeze from both sides.
But you know what? This na opportunity. The people wey fit adapt, we go survive. I dey now focus on smaller cars with better fuel economy. Honda Fit, Toyota Vitz, Suzuki. The margins smaller but the volume higher. The question wey dey my mind be say who go still dey buy luxury tokunbo for this economy? Because the math don change completely.
