Bandits On TikTok: Giveaway or Recruitment?

Nigerian bandits have been using TikTok to host giveaways, drawing thousands of Nigerians to participate despite the source of the cash being proceeds from kidnappings and violence. The trend has sparked outrage, with many citizens condemning the participation as a sign of decaying morals and extreme poverty. One social media user remarked, "The willingness of citizens to drop their bank account numbers for cash, even when the source is known to be the proceeds of kidnapping and violence, all point to the extreme poverty and hunger many face."

In response, Nigerian lawmakers yesterday demanded that the Department of State Services and the Senate arrest the bandits flaunting cash on TikTok. Senate President called the matter an urgent national security priority, urging improved coordination and real-time response to online intelligence. It remains unclear whether authorities will apprehend the criminals or punish giveaway recipients.
