Group berates ex-gov Jang for opposing indigeneship for Hausa-Fulani

The Kautal Pulaaku Fulbe Association of Nigeria has criticized former Plateau State Governor Jonah David Jang for opposing a court ruling that grants indigeneship to Hausa residents in Jos North Local Government Area based on birth and long-term residency. Jang argued the judgment threatens the state’s identity and indigenous rights, warning it could heighten tensions.

The Fulani group, through its National Publicity Secretary Haruna Idris Bayero, countered on Sunday that Jang’s stance is “dangerous” and violates Nigeria’s Constitution. Bayero stated that every citizen, including Hausa/Fulani families who have lived in Plateau for generations, deserves recognition as bona fide residents. He added that the indigene-settler divide has been used to marginalize people, denying them certificates despite their contributions to the state’s economy and security.
