I am Hausa girl, I grow up in Kano. When I was 16 my father call me and say I will marry my mother's younger brother. The man is 42, I only see him during Sallah. He already have two wives. My mother she cry small but she say it is our family way, that we marry inside family. Nobody ask me anything. The wedding, they do it quiet. Just elders and one mallam. I sit down on the floor inside my lace, I cannot even look up. That night the man enter the room. He didn't talk to me. He just do what he want. I was 16. I was his wife but I was also his niece. I just held my mouth because my mother say endure.I stay there three years. I cook, I clean, I born two girls for him. My second delivery nearly finish me, I was 18 and my body tear and nobody take me serious. Anytime I cry my mother go say it is Allah's will. But wallahi I was just dying slowly inside. I stop eating. I stop talking to people. One day a woman from our area, she don go Abuja before, she come back and see me. She look at my face and she just ask me quiet quiet — do you want to leave? I just nod my head. She help me carry my babies go women shelter for Kaduna. My family say I bring shame, they cut me off completely. But today my daughters are 7 and 5. They will never experience what I experience. I dey sew clothes for people for Sabon Gari. The money is not plenty but I am free.Tradition is not always from God. Sometimes our elders just use tradition to do what they want. If your daughter is crying on her wedding night, please hear her. Don't just tell her to endure.
