Diezani walks free in London: What does this mean for Nigeria?

P

Former Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke has been acquitted of all bribery charges by a London court today. After 46 hours of deliberation, the jury at Southwark Crown Court found her not guilty on all six counts. This is a major blow to British prosecutors who spent over a decade investigating her.

During the trial, prosecutors alleged she received lavish benefits from oil contractors, including over 2 million pounds spent at Harrods and 4.6 million pounds on property refurbishments. But Diezani maintained she never took bribes, telling the BBC, "I can state categorically that at no point did I ask for, take or receive a bribe of any sort." She argued that NNPC's disorganised financial structure forced her to set up a logistics company in London for official arrangements.

Now that she is cleared in the UK, what happens to the multiple corruption cases still pending against her in Nigerian courts? We have already forfeited assets worth billions of naira linked to her. Does this London verdict weaken those cases or strengthen her defence?
