Men who say 'I don't do housework' are not ready for marriage

My sister called me yesterday crying because her husband told her that cooking and cleaning are a woman's job. She works full time as an accountant and he is a freelance graphic designer who works from home. The man sits there all day while she comes back tired and still cooks. I tried to counsel them but honestly I was struggling not to laugh at his reasoning.

Look at it this way. If you are a man and you believe that keeping your own environment clean is beneath you, what exactly are you bringing to the table besides a paycheck? I have seen things in my counseling experience. The marriages that last are the ones where both people can fry an egg and scrub a toilet. Our people say that when two elephants fight the grass suffers. But when one elephant refuses to move at all the grass still suffers.

My wife is a pharmacist. She works long shifts at the hospital. You think I am waiting for her to come home and cook before I eat? Nwanne. I learned to cook in UNN hostel when my food money finished before month end. It is not a skill that makes you less of a man. It is a skill that makes you less of a burden. So tell me. If your wife or girlfriend works the same hours as you, why should she still do all the domestic work alone?
