I Spent Seven Years Praying for a Child. My Pastor Was the One Who Told Me to Stop.
I am a 43-year-old woman from Ilorin. Married at 28, and for seven years, my womb was a battlefield. Every month I would calculate dates, pray, cry, fast. I attended every women's conference, every deliverance program. My husband's family started looking at me like I was cursed. My mother-in-law would say things like 'even the goats in this village have produced more than you.' I would just smile and say 'God's time is the best.'
This was around 2019, when the economy was already bad but not as bad as now. I had spent so much on 'seed offerings' for my breakthrough. One pastor told me to sow 50,000 naira into his ministry because 'Rebecca was barren for 20 years but she sowed and God remembered her.' I did it. Nothing changed. Another prophet said I needed a special oil from Jerusalem. I paid 35,000 naira for it. Still nothing.
Then one day, after a particularly intense prayer session at a mountain, I went to see my own pastor for counselling. He was a quiet man, not the shouting type. I told him everything. He listened for a long time, then he said something I will never forget. He said, 'Sister, I think God is not answering this prayer because maybe this is not the path He has for you. Have you ever considered that maybe you are supposed to adopt?'
Omo, I was angry. I almost walked out. How dare he? But something in his eyes was not mocking me. He was not trying to sell me another prayer product. He just sat there, looking tired. He said, 'I have seen too many women destroy their health, their marriages, and their faith chasing a biological child. Your faith should not depend on God giving you exactly what you want.'
I cried for three days. Not because I agreed, but because I was exhausted. The fight had left my body. I stopped going to prayer meetings for a while. I just sat at home and read my Bible quietly. And slowly, something shifted. Not my womb , my heart. I started looking at orphanages differently. My husband was hesitant at first, but we talked. We are now in the process of adopting a little boy from an orphanage in Ilorin. He is three years old, and he calls me 'Mummy' in a way that makes my chest hurt with joy.
I am not saying God answered my prayer. I am saying maybe the prayer itself was wrong. Maybe the miracle was not a baby from my body, but the love I have to give to a child who already exists. I still believe in God, but I no longer believe He is a vending machine you pay with offerings. Sometimes His answer is 'no' because He has a different yes.
If you are a woman reading this who is still waiting for a child, I am not telling you to give up. I am just telling you to ask yourself: what if your blessing is not what you think it is? What if God is trying to show you something else, but you are too busy looking at your stomach to see it?
