2027 might be Nigeria's last election — Arewa youths warn

The Coalition of Arewa Youth Groups held a press briefing today and said something that should make every Nigerian stop and think. They warned that 2027 may be our last election if things continue as they are. Their main demand is the immediate release of former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai from ICPC custody.

Now I have followed Nigerian politics long enough to know when a statement is just noise and when it carries real weight. These Arewa youths are angry because they see selective justice. They pointed out that several former governors under EFCC investigation are walking free, some even contesting elections under APC, while El-Rufai sits in detention. The group said, and I quote: "If things continue to happen like this in Nigeria, 2027 might be our last attempt to have an election, because if we don't fight APC the evil in it, we are going to be worse than the military rules." They called on Northern brothers to rise up and resist what they called Governor Uba Sani's attempt to turn Kaduna into a one-party system.

Let me be clear. I am not an APC apologist and I am not defending El-Rufai. But selective justice is the fastest way to destroy whatever faith is left in this system. When one man is held while others with similar records campaign freely, you cannot blame the youth for losing hope. The group ended by saying President Tinubu must go back to Lagos and Governor Uba Sani might follow him. Strong words. But are they wrong?
