Kenneth Okonkwo refuses to back down from N5bn Obi lawsuit threat
5 months ago
Kenneth Okonkwo has told Peter Obi that he will not retract his words, even after the NDC presidential candidate threatened a N5 billion lawsuit against him. In a letter dated June 16, Okonkwo through his lawyer insisted that everything he said on Channels TV about Obi defrauding House of Representatives aspirants of N10 million each and writing a list of candidates in a hotel is the truth. He says he spoke based on briefs from NDC aspirants who were allegedly extorted by the South-east caucus led by Obi.
But here is where it gets messy. The very aspirant Okonkwo relied on, Obunike Ohaegbu, has come out to say he never told Okonkwo that Peter Obi asked him to pay N10 million. Ohaegbu said on Channels TV that he and Obi are actually victims of what Okonkwo is alleging. So who is lying here? Okonkwo also accused Obi's camp of leaking his personal phone number in the pre-action letter, calling it a data breach and an attempt to set him up for harassment or worse.
This is the kind of political drama that makes you wonder if any of them can be trusted. Okonkwo was Obi's spokesperson in Labour Party, now they are at each other's throats. The question is simple: is Okonkwo exposing real corruption or is he just bitter about leaving the party? Let's argue this.
