Edo Governor threatens death by hanging for kidnappers

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo said yesterday that he will set up special courts within two to three weeks specifically to try kidnappers and cultists. He made this statement during the parade of suspected criminals by the Edo State Police Command on Thursday June 18. And he did not stop there — he said he will personally sign the death warrant for execution by hanging.

What caught my attention was his specific language. He said he will take convicted kidnappers to Ring Road roundabout so everyone can see them. He said he will not have any regrets. This is a very strong statement from a governor and it raises serious questions about due process. We have death penalty laws in Nigeria but they are rarely enforced. The special courts idea is interesting but we must ask — will these courts meet constitutional standards for fair trial?

I understand the frustration with kidnapping in Edo State. It has become a serious problem affecting ordinary people. But I am concerned about the speed he is promising. Two to three weeks to set up special courts? That is extremely fast for any judicial process in Nigeria. My question is simple — can we trust that justice will be properly served under this kind of pressure or are we looking at mob justice dressed in judicial robes?
