I Gave My Wife an STI Because of a Secret I Never Told Her. She Still Thinks It Was Her.
This was 2022. I was 34, married for five years, living in Ikorodu. My wife and I had been trying for a child since 2020. Every month she would cry when her period came. I held her and said God's time is the best. Meanwhile, I knew something she didn't.
Back in 2019, before we started trying, I had a short thing with a woman I met at a conference in Ikeja. It lasted three weeks. When it ended, I noticed some symptoms. I went to a clinic in Ogba , one of those discreet ones with no signboard. The doctor said I had chlamydia. He gave me antibiotics and said it would clear. I never told my wife. I assumed it was gone.
Fast forward to 2021. We start trying for a baby. Nothing happens. My wife goes for tests , everything is fine. They tell her maybe it's stress. She starts drinking all sorts of herbs. I see her pain but I keep quiet. Then in 2022, she gets a routine test and the doctor finds she has chlamydia. She was shocked. She asked me if I had been unfaithful. I said no. I told her she must have picked it from a public toilet or something. She believed me. She took the treatment. We are still trying for a child till today.
Omo, the guilt is something I carry every day. I know I am the one who brought that thing into our marriage. I know I am the reason she went through those tests, those tears, those herbs. But I have not found the courage to tell her. If I tell her now, it will destroy everything. So I just keep praying God heals our situation and forgives me. But I know the truth. And the truth is heavy.
