The day I calculated my way out of a scam in Yaba
5 months ago
I was at my co-working space in Yaba last week when this guy walks up to me with a 'business opportunity.' He says he has a connection at a major telco and can get me a contract to supply laptops at a price that made my eyes water. The margin was something like 40 percent. In this economy? I almost laughed in his face.
See ehn, I have been in tech long enough to know that if the margin is that sweet, somebody is the product. So I asked him for his company registration number. He fumbled. I asked for a reference from the telco. He said the contact is 'sensitive.' I asked for a sample PO. He said I need to pay a 'commitment fee' first. Bros, the man was selling me my own greed.
I told him I will think about it. He called me three times the next day. I blocked him. The lesson is simple: if the deal is too good, it's because they are planning to use your money to buy something. Probably fuel for their generator.
