Over 1 Million Ekiti Voters Head to Polls Today — What Could Go Wrong?
So today is the Ekiti governorship election and over 1,059,360 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots across 16 local government areas. INEC says they have deployed all sensitive materials from the CBN in Ado-Ekiti under tight security, and the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Bunmi Omoseyindemi, is confident everything will go smoothly. But with 1,028,929 PVCs already collected — that is a 97% collection rate — you have to wonder if the turnout will actually match the hype.
The big talking points going into this election are insecurity, the rising cost of living, infrastructure, and that zoning debate that never seems to die. INEC National Chairman Joash Amupitan was in Ado-Ekiti yesterday doing a mock accreditation test, and he said BVAS authenticated voters in 5 to 7 seconds using fingerprints and facial recognition. He also warned that the biggest threat is not technical failure but misinformation and fake news that could cause panic. The police have already deployed personnel across the state to prevent violence.
What I find interesting is that registered voters jumped from 987,647 in 2023 to over 1 million now. That is a real increase in political awareness or maybe just desperation for change. Either way, today will tell us if Ekiti people are ready to hold their leaders accountable or if the usual game of money and influence will decide things. Which candidate do you think has the edge in this one?
