The day my generator finally died and I discovered peace

J

My generator finally gave up last Tuesday. The old Tiger generator, the one that survived two rainy seasons and a landlord who refused to fix the wiring. It coughed, smoked, and just stopped. I sat there in the sudden silence and realised I had been listening to that sound for five years without noticing.

I called my guy who repairs generators. He said the engine block is gone, cost to fix is more than a new one. I did the calculation. A new inverter system with solar panels costs about ₦1.8 million now, roughly $1,320 at current rates. A new generator is ₦450,000. The numbers say the inverter pays for itself in fuel savings within 18 months. But the upfront cost is painful.

I am still deciding. But that moment of silence, just the birds and the neighbour's radio, made me realise how much noise we accept as normal. We adapt to things that are slowly killing our peace. Generators, bad relationships, jobs that drain us. We just keep refueling and hoping they don't break. Maybe sometimes the breakdown is a blessing.
