Back in 2017, I was in SS3 in Owerri and I knew I was not going to pass my WAEC. Not because I was dull , I just never had time to read. My mother was a single mother selling akara at Ekeonunwa market. Every morning I helped her before school. By evening I was too tired to open a book. My friend's elder brother knew a guy who wrote exams for people. He charged 35,000 naira per subject. I put together money from my mother's purse little by little over three months. I told her I needed money for extra lessons. She gave me from her meager profit. Omo, I still feel the shame when I remember her face. The guy wrote five subjects for me. I wrote the rest myself. I passed everything. I got admission into Federal Polytechnic Nekede. Four years later, I graduated with a distinction in Business Administration. My mother was at my graduation crying. She said all her suffering paid off. I smiled and hugged her. But inside I was dying. I have never told anyone. Not my mother, not my friends, not even my pastor when I went for counseling. Now I am working in a bank in Owerri. Every day I sit at my desk and wonder if I deserve this life. The paper says I am qualified. But I know the truth. I tell myself it does not matter anymore because I worked hard in polytechnic. But some nights I cannot sleep. I look at my certificate on the wall and I feel like a thief. The lesson I learned: shortcuts will follow you. Even when you think you have escaped, your conscience will remind you. I am not saying do not cheat , I am saying be ready to live with what you did. I am still living with it.
