Tinubu's aide calls Obi's resignation demand childish — but who is really embarrassing Nigeria?
So the Presidency has finally responded to Peter Obi's call for President Tinubu to resign, and the response is exactly what you would expect from a government that has lost the plot completely. A presidential aide, Bayo Onanuga, described Obi's demand as childish and hollow. Imagine that. A man whose principal is struggling to explain how he got his certificates is now calling a former governor childish for asking questions that every Nigerian with a working brain is asking.
Let me break this down for those who are not following. Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate, has been consistent in his position that the President should step down to allow for a proper investigation into the allegations surrounding his credentials and the general state of governance. This is not a new position. He has been saying this since the election. But now that the government is facing serious credibility issues, the response is to label the opposition as childish. That is the level of intellectual bankruptcy we are dealing with.
The irony is rich. A government that cannot fix the exchange rate, cannot secure the country, and cannot even produce a coherent certificate is calling anyone childish. Meanwhile, the cost of a bag of rice in my neighborhood in Lagos Island has crossed 85,000 naira. That is not childish. That is the reality of a failed policy direction. The question I keep asking myself is this: when will Nigerians stop being distracted by these petty exchanges and start demanding accountability from those who have clearly run out of ideas?
