Deji Adeyanju just dropped a bombshell at El-Rufai's trial
4 months ago
Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju testified yesterday at the Federal High Court in Abuja in the case the DSS filed against former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai over comments about intercepting phone calls. Adeyanju told the court that during an Arise TV interview on February 13, he heard El-Rufai say, 'We listened to their calls' — a direct admission that they monitored conversations involving National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.
The court even replayed the interview as evidence, and Adeyanju stood by his account. He also dropped this line: 'The oppressor of yesterday cannot suddenly become the hero of today' — a clear jab at El-Rufai's demolition spree against political opponents during his time as governor. Defence counsel Paul Erokoro tried to push back, asking if El-Rufai explicitly said he tapped calls, but Adeyanju held firm: that is exactly what the former governor claimed on national television.
Justice Abdulmalik has adjourned the case to June 23 for continuation. With this kind of testimony, how long before El-Rufai's own words become the rope that hangs him in court?
