The day my best friend called me a thief on our group chat

Last year during harmattan, my then best friend Funke and I decided to start a skincare reselling business together. She found this supplier on Instagram, someone called 'Dr. Amina' with thousands of followers and glowing reviews. We pooled ₦500k together, ₦250k each. I transferred my own money and everything looked legit for two weeks. Then the supplier disappeared. Blocked us on all platforms. Funke didn't even call me first. She went straight to our mutual WhatsApp group of 30 people and wrote: 'Temitope Balogun collected my money for a fake business, she is a scammer.' I saw the messages at 3am. My phone wouldn't stop buzzing. People were calling me a thief. My own cousin sent me a voice note asking if I was okay. I couldn't even cry. I just sat there staring at the ceiling. The next morning I went to her house in Surulere with my bank statement, the supplier's page, and the police report I had filed. She didn't apologize. She just said 'you should have done better research.' I lost ₦250k and a friendship I had since JSS1. Now when people ask me about business partnerships, I tell them: trust is good but paper trail is better. And never put all your money in something because your friend said it's guaranteed. That word 'guaranteed' is how they catch you.
