Sowore remanded in Kuje prison over cybercrime charges

Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore is back in Kuje correctional facility after a Federal High Court judge revoked his bail. Justice Mohammed Umar ruled on Monday that Sowore deliberately failed to appear in court and gave no excuse for his absence.

The case stems from cybercrime charges filed by the Department of State Services (DSS), alleging that Sowore called President Bola Tinubu a criminal. Sowore has denied the allegations. Justice Umar also refused to recuse himself from the case after Sowore accused him of bias.

Human rights groups including Amnesty International and SERAP have condemned the detention and called for Sowore's release. This is not his first legal battle — he previously won a N30 million damages case against the Lagos State Police Command for declaring him wanted without due process. The question now is whether the judiciary will protect dissent or become a tool for silencing it.
