State police with federal off-switch is not police reform at all

So theCable dropped this piece yesterday about state police and how the federal government still wants to hold the off-switch. The idea is that states can have their own police but the president can still take over if he feels like it. That is not reform, that is just rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.

If we cannot trust the federal government to run the police properly now, why would we trust them with the power to override state police? This is the same government that uses the police to harass opposition and silence critics. I am from Benin City and I know how police behave in Edo. If they give us state police but with federal control, nothing will change. The same oppression will just wear a different uniform.

Be honest with yourself. Do you really believe the federal government will ever let go of that power? Or are we just fooling ourselves with this half-baked solution?
