I Paid a Woman in Calabar to Break My Nose Because I Hated My Face. The Pain Was Nothing Compared to My Shame.
This was back in 2020, during COVID. I was 27, living in Calabar, working as a receptionist at a small hotel. I had always hated my nose. Since secondary school, people called me 'Big Bird' because of it. My own mother would say, 'God gave you that nose so you can smell trouble from far.' She meant it as a joke, but it cut deep every time.
I started saving. Every month, I put away 5,000 naira from my salary. After two years, I had 120,000 naira. I found a woman in Calabar who did 'nose reshaping' , no hospital, no doctor, just her living room and her hands. She said she could fracture the bone and reset it. I paid her 80,000 upfront.
The day came. She gave me local anesthesia, then she took a metal rod and broke my nose. The sound , crack , like stepping on a dry stick. Blood everywhere. I screamed. She said, 'Shh, it's working.' I stayed in her spare room for three days, face swollen like a football. I told my family I had malaria. They believed me.
When the swelling went down, my nose looked exactly the same. She had done nothing. I went back to confront her, but she had moved. No address, no phone. I lost 80,000 naira and gained nothing but a broken nose that healed crooked. Now I have a bump on the bridge. It's worse than before.
Omo, I look in the mirror now and I laugh. The thing I hated most about myself, I made worse. I was so desperate to be beautiful that I let a woman with no license break my face. If you are reading this and you hate something about your body, please just leave it. God made it that way. You cannot fix what is not broken with pain and money. You will only break yourself more.
